Fabrizia Pons in Tuthill Safari

Rally ace Fabrizia Pons has just agreed to co-drive the Tuthill Porsche of Patrick Njiru and Travis Pastrana on the 2011 East African Safari Rally.

The Tuthill Porsche 911 of the Race4Change team will leave Mombasa on the 19th of November for ten days of gruelling rallying over many of the old stages of the tortuous Safari Rally. Three Race4Change Porsches will run the event, but we will also be running many of the other 911s set to compete in 2011.

Safari will not be the first time Fabrizia has worked with our team or our cars. She and long-standing rally partner Michèle Mouton took part in the Morocco Rally last year in a Tuthill Porsche (see team pic) and narrowly missed victory: cheated by a brake caliper smashed by a rock. It was the first time we have ever seen that happen in over thirty years of rallying.

No Michèle this time around, but Fabrizia will have her hands full navigating US action sports hero, Travis Pastrana, and Patrick Njiru, Africa’s most successful indigenous driver, returning to the cockpit after many years away. Neither driver will be going for stage wins, but their mega-winning co-driver will be hard to resist when she urges them to ‘push!’ with that beautiful Italian accent.

We are very excited to have Fabrizia back with us, and looking forward to taking the battle to all comers with Björn Waldegård and son Mathias in our leading car. Keep up with Safari and all our news here and on the Race4Change blog.

If you feel like donating a little to the Race4Change effort that would be appreciated also: it’s an incredible cause and the main reason we are supporting the team so avidly. We are putting lots of unpaid time and energy into this effort, as we believe in the aims of the organisation: the empowerment of women and building a better life for the poorest among us!
