McRae with Tuthill Porsche on Pirelli Historic Rally

Tuthill Challenge-spec Porsche 911 rally cars perform well on Pirelli Historic Rally in Carlisle

The Tuthill Challenge-spec rally cars acquitted themselves well over the testing terrain of the Pirelli Historic in Carlisle this weekend.

Lord of the Saltire, Jimmy McRae brought his Challenge car home in a respectable second in class, behind an Ascona 400. The Ascona is not to be sniffed at: it’s a potent weapon in the right hands.

Jimmy’s own pace in the Ascona 400 was legendary. I remember him passing Rohrl’s 300bhp works Porsche 911 on the 1981 Manx Rally. And that was in the dark! The ensuing battle between Jim and the much-missed Tony Pond was a sight to behold, just over 30 seconds separating the two British rally stalwarts after 300 miles competitive driving.

Dessie Nutt also had a second in class finish in his Tuthill-prepared 2-litre 911. Historic rallying wouldn’t be the same without sight of Dessie’s familiar Light Yellow short wheelbase 911, flat out and kicking up the dust.

The picture of Dessie’s car comes courtesy of James Roberts on Flickr. ‘It’s a cracker’ as we say in Northern Ireland.
