Monte Carlo Historique 2019 with John Buffum

Tuthill Porsche teams with successful American rally driver, John Buffum, to celebrate a memorable anniversary on the 2019 Monte Carlo Historique rally

We’ve been preparing a car for the 2019 Monte Carlo Historique for American rally driver and friend of the family, John Buffum. The weather here has been perfect for a bit of pre-Monte testing before the car heads off to France in the next few days.

Born in Connecticut, Buffum is believed to be the only driver to have competed in one world championship rally event in five successive decades since the 1960s. With eleven national titles and 117 national championship rally wins under his belt, John Buffum is one of America’s most famous rally drivers and easily its most successful.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of John’s 12th place finish on the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally in a Porsche 911T, co-driven by Stephen Behr. 1969 was a famous year for Porsche: Björn Waldegård and Lars Helmer took victory in a 911S, followed by the 911 of Larousse and Perramond. The 911T of Buffum and Behr was the third 911 home. Other 911s included Vic Elford and David Stone, who came home 28th overall.

John went on to run rallies all over the USA, also building and consulting on rally car builds for manufacturers including Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi. We’re delighted to supply one of Francis’ own 911s finished in a replica period livery for a great adventure to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a memorable finish. Best of luck to John and all those competing in the 2019 Monte Carlo Historic Rally!
