New Safari Rally Documentary from Race4Health & Team Tido

Team Tidö Safari Rally documentary tells epic tale of survival and victory

Friend of Tuthill Porsche and leading motorsport charity fundraiser, Race4Health by Team Tidö, has just released an hour-long documentary covering its adventures on the 2015 East African Safari Classic Rally. Presented in Swedish – with optional English subtitles on Youtube – this beautifully constructed movie tells the sometimes quite emotional but always gripping story of Team Tido’s three-sided approach to Safari: as rally competitors, social activists and Swedish motorsport devotees racing in memory of a lost compatriot.

The Team Tidö driver pairing of Stig Blomqvist and Stéphane Prévot took a well-earned victory in their Tuthill-prepared Porsche 911, coming home ahead of fellow team members, Richard Goransson and Emil Axelsson. But, as with so many great motorsport events, the final results do not tell the full story of an epic battle on the world’s toughest rally.

The Team Tidö squad on last year’s Safari Rally was comprised of six classic Porsche 911s. The documentary tells how three cars launched a challenge for overall victory right from the start, with the remaining cars battling hard for a top ten finish. The rally was thrown into disarray right from day one, when the orange 911 of Roger Samuelsson and Robin Friberg had a huge accident on a fast section where the heavy rains had completely washed away part of the road. Shrouded by the dust from the leading cars, the surface damage was invisible until it was too late.

Pitched into a series of rolls, the 911’s bodywork sustained enormous damage, but we were delighted to hear that both occupants had emerged completely unscathed. It took a while to get the car out of the stage and back to service, where a detailed examination was carried out on the chassis and roll cage. The cage measured up perfectly, so a huge effort to get the car back into the rally and take the chequered flag then swung into action. While that was under way, the rest of Team Tidö continued their challenge for victory and also went about their charitable work, bringing sight tests and prescription eyeglasses to needy villagers along the rally route.

As the movie shows, the other five Porsches did not have things their own way! The full story of their determination to reach the finish is well worth your time and attention.
