Safari Rally starts tomorrow – Travis Pastrana

Nine Tuthill Porsche 911s prepared for Saturday Safari start: watch Björn Waldegård, Travis Pastrana and Patrick Njiru making headlines.

Wifi coverage in Kenya is surprisingly spotty, so am currently struggling to get pics back from the team. Richard has just sent me this one which is worth sharing: the Tuthill Porsche fleet outside their Mombasa hotel.

It’s 1.30 AM in Kenya. Tomorrow (today their time) sees the start of the 2011 East African Safari Rally, and Tuthills have a fine collection of spotless Porsche machinery, primed and ready to head off into the wilderness to face the threat of destruction.

With driver skill and co-driver guidance, nine 911s will still be running when the rally finishes back in Mombasa on November 28th. They all seemed to make it through shakedown OK, though we did have issues with a light roll for one car and torsion bar woes on another. Nevertheless, the fleet has been tuned to perfection and we’re ready to face the music.

Watch this space, and the Race4Change blog for more news and daily reports from Safari. Race4Change has a fair bit of momentum running in the Kenyan media, so Björn Waldegård, Travis Pastrana and Patrick Njiru could be making headlines. Truth is, all of our drivers are looking forward to the event, and to facing what must be the toughest challenge in historic rallying anywhere in the world with their Tuthill Porsche 911s.

We love Safari – prepare for the men and boys to be separated!

Here’s some video from the R4C camp, showing a meet and greet around the Tuthill cars yesterday. Notice Richard has had his hair cut especially for the occasion! Also great to see Björn and Mathias in there, as well as our great friend, Fabrizia Pons, who will be trying to keeping Travis Pastrana and Patrick Njiru on the straight and narrow. Great atmosphere!
