Waldegard Extends Porsche Safari Rally Lead

Day 4 on Safari Rally 2011 and Tuthill Porsche driver Björn Waldegård finished the day with a 40-minute advantage over second place

Day 4 on Safari and Tuthill Porsche driver Björn Waldegård finished the day with a 40-minute advantage over second place, which is now the Datsun 260Z of Geoff Bell.

Waldegård profited from problems for main rival Grégoire de Mevius on the first stage this morning. The Kronos 911 broke its front suspension and had to be rescued from the stage, which cost the second place man a huge chunk of time.

“We had brilliant safari stages today,” Waldegård told the EASR press office. “With lots of different landscapes and terrain, but it’s a pity Grégoire had problems – we were having a good fight.”

Bell was very pleased to have moved up into overall second place, especially as it meant breaking up the Porsche domination. “We were in Marcy’s dust in the final section and suddenly the dust stopped,” he explained. “And there he was, stuck in a mudhole. Now at least there’s a bit of diversity in the top three!”

Third place overall is another Tuthill Porsche driver: Steven Funk, co-driven by Andrew Doig. “I’m shocked we’re doing so well,” said Funk. “It’s all credit to the car with a bit of lady luck. I had a super day.”

It’s a rest day tomorrow, so the crews will be looking forward to catching their breath whilst the service crews work on the cars. Björn has a useful cushion but rallying is never predictable. As the five-time Safari winner always says: “The Safari has its own rules.”
