Porsche 911 Turbo Tuning & Restoration

Turbo-tastic Porsche 930s get the Tuthill Treatment

This week has seen three classic 911 Turbos in for overhaul. Baltic Blue is a favourite colour of ours, so the example pictured, in Baltic with the early-style bright finish to the petals on the Fuchs alloys, was perfect scenery while it was here for a service.

The second Turbo – a later 5-speed version – was in for a suspension overhaul. The 3.3 Turbos make around 300-330 bhp depending on the version, and the owner was reporting it as a bit of a handful. This is not usually the case, so we were asked to overhaul the suspension bushes, as well as resetting tracking, cambers and ride heights.

After a good look around underneath and a road test by Richard, we decided the problem was old tyres that had deformed while the car sat around for a few years during a period of a previous owner’s working abroad. New tyres and one quick suspension setup later, the 930 was back to its legendary best, much to the delight of the new owner, and his bank manager.

We are all about saving customers money where we can – as long as it makes sense. Though we often quote for the worst case scenario, these cars do not always need as much work as was first suggested, so smaller bills become the order of the day. The final 930 this week was a perfect example of that.

Previous workshops had charged over 100 hours to fix oil leaks that had not been cured. The easiest way for us to ensure we solved the problem first time was to pull the engine and gearbox out of the car, and do the work in our engine shop.

This might sound like a pricey solution, but our experience has taught us how to get the engine and ‘box out of a car in under an hour if it all comes apart easily. Engine out is definitely the easiest way to go about rectifying oil leaks on older 911s and saves owners money in the long run. Our successful attempt cost the owner less than half the last unsuccessful attempt by another well known name.

We always do our best to ensure we work efficiently and conscientiously. Owners are more than welcome to drop in and see progress on jobs like the 911 Turbo oil leaks, or paintwork, or a rally car build. Give us a ring on 01295 750 514 to come and see how we work.
