Porsche 911 Engine Detailing: Cosmetic Refresh

Cosmetic Engine Uplifts are GO!

A 911’s engine is the part most car people want to see and hear but, after 30 year’s hard labour, many Porsche engines are a let down to look at.

The flat six has famously been described as an air pump and that is indeed what it is. The big centre fan pumps air into the shroud covering the cylinders and crankcase, and this air is then pushed down into the heater ducts and out over the engine oil cooler. All that moving air carries dust and grit, which damages the beautiful factory metal finishes, causing the external engine parts to deteriorate: things like the magnesium fan and housing, the metal tinware down the sides of the motor, the valve covers, inlet manifolds, throttle bodies, fan pulleys and so on.

One of the specialities here at Tuthill Porsche is Cosmetic Engine Overhaul. We remove the engine from the car and take it down to the basic longblock (complete engine without ancillaries). We then strip the corrosion off the metal external parts, repaint/powdercoat, plate or anodise the parts back to as-new condition, refinish any painted parts such as the engine shroud, and reassemble using all new fasteners, so you are left with an as-new looking powerplant: something to be proud of.

While the engine is out, weepy oil seals can be changed and valves can be adjusted, plugs can be easily replaced and distributors can be serviced etc, so it is a job that is well suited to combining with a major service. A Cosmetic Engine Overhaul can improve our enjoyment of the car and its value too: a clean and leak-free 911 engine is a thing of beauty and enhances desirability of any classic Porsche.

If you’ve been feeling a little self conscious about opening your engine lid of late, get in touch with us about having your engine cosmetically overhauled. It is all done in house by some of the UK’s most experienced Porsche professionals and, in the great scheme of things, it’s not as expensive as you might think.
