One of the most successful Tuthill Porsche 911 rally cars campaigned in recent years is now for sale. A veteran of rallies all over the world, including Africa, the Americas, Europe and Scandinavia, this 911 has always been maintained regardless of cost and is presented ready to be used and enjoyed in competition.
Built in Stuttgart in 1977, VBD 205R received its Tuthill Porsche baptism in March 2011, when its first build was completed by our workshop as one of the five rally cars constructed for the Tuthill Porsche Rally Challenge. Built to FIA regulations and carrying full FIA papers, Tuthill Challenge cars competed in five rounds of the 2011 British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC) and have been the backbone of our fleet ever since, proving highly effective in the right hands.
Tuthill Challenge cars are strong and reliable. Their apparent simplicity belies hundreds of hours invested in shell preparation, to prepare a stiff chassis for a tuned engine, paired with a custom Tuthill transmission and differential designed to maximise the available torque. Dampers and brakes are to FIA regulations and the cars feature our custom rally wiring looms and a full roll cage. The cars are civilised and comfortable to use on road sections – clients have covered tens of thousands of miles in these cars and all enjoy travelling in them.
VBD 205R was used as the guest car for the series and driven by some memorable names. Jimmy McRae enjoyed exceptionally competitive drives in the car, claiming a class win on the 2011 Ulster Rally, and second in class on the Pirelli Historic. The great Francois Delecour took the wheel on the Bulldog Historic Rally, coming home third after picking up a road penalty. Richard Tuthill drove the car on the Severn Valley Rally and enjoyed a terrific weekend.
Following its strong debut in the 2011 BHRC, VBD featured as part of the Below Zero Ice Driving fleet and was also seen in demonstration at Carfest 2014. Ryan Champion then used the car in the 2014 Trackrod Rally, taking another class win. It graduated to international rallying when Subaru works driver, Patrick Sandell, took the car to overall victory in Sweden on the 2014 Midnight Sun Rally. Patrick also used VDB as the course car on the 2015 Winter Rally Ostersund, before it changed hands and was purchased by the current owner.
As the new owner intended to take on the marathon rally events run by the Endurance Rallying Association, VBD was returned to the Tuthill workshops for preparation to 1973 Carrera RS specification with appropriate FIA and FIVA documentation. The car has run in this form ever since, enjoying successful outings on UK events such as the Red Kite Rally and flyaway events including the Classic Sahara Challenge, Baltic Classic Rally and the Classic Safari Challenge, where it won the gold medal for fastest car overall.
Following a recent engine rebuild costing almost £15,000, this rally-proven 911 is in very good condition overall and presented ready to go rallying, anywhere in the world. A spares package is also available for the car – details available on request. We are happy to talk prospective purchasers through all aspects of the car’s specification, including a potential upgrade to full Safari specification.
