Round two of the 2019 2.0L Cup was recently held at Spa, as part of Peter Auto’s Spa Classic weekend. Spa Classic distinguishes itself from other historic weekends through a focus on the history of the 24 Hours of Francorchamps, “with particular emphasis on touring cars from the 1966 to 1984 period”.
The Heritage Touring Cup field exemplified the benefits of racing for historic car development and how competition encourages reliability. Grids have doubled in size since the series was confirmed in 2014, with more than seventy per cent of cars now reaching the finish lines, compared to less than forty percent in the early days.
The 2.0L Cup has shifted up a gear this year, with entries up on the same event last year. While 2018 showed 36 cars on the grid with 27 classified finishers, 2019 welcomed 38 cars to the starting grid, with 30 cars taking the chequered flag.
The Tuthill-powered 2-litre 911 of Jose Ruben Zanchetta claimed pole position at Spa, with a best time of 3:03.304. Richard Cook and Harvey Stanley won the Gentleman Drivers’ category coming home fourth overall, while the Tuthill car of Martin and Lukas Halusa finished fifth – a stunning seventeen places higher than their qualifying position. Philippe de Craene’s excellent ninth place finish made for three Tuthill Porsches in the top ten. David Clark and John Bennett came home P17 and P20 respectively and all of our drivers enjoyed the weekend.
We’re now preparing for the third round at the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or in Dijon from June 7th to 9th. The competition was tight in 2018, when the six quickest qualifiers were split by less than two seconds. Here’s to some sunshine and even closer racing when we get to France next weekend.
