Project number four in the 2019 Twelve Builds of Christmas is a beautiful 1965 Porsche 911 2-litre. The car was built for both race and some road use, in the best tradition of Porsche’s original sports-purpose programme.
An early 1965 model, with the sought-after four-hole horn grilles and the bag washer tank, this was an original car in solid condition. The first job was to carefully strip the shell and put the trim to one side. The car was being reassembled with full interior trim and much of what was removed would be reused.
With the bare shell mounted on one of our chassis frames, it was sent off for media blasting. Paint removal revealed no hidden disasters and the shell was then fixed to one of our Celette body jigs for fabrication to begin.
All of this car’s original panels were in very good condition, so were retained for a numbers matching rebuild. Metalwork included minor repairs to windscreen corners and some reshaping to the floors. We added our usual strengthening to the shell in line with the 2.0L Cup regulations and fitted a full bolt-in roll cage.
The car was soon ready to move into paintwork. Preparation and paint in Silver took a couple of weeks and then it was rolled into the car build workshop, where it underwent the final part of its transformation.
The 2-litre engine and transmission were rebuilt to our latest spec. 2.0L Cup suspension and brakes were fitted (including our twin master cylinder pedal box), along with new oil and fuel systems and a fire extinguisher system. A competition wiring harness was fitted, with period wooden panels to the dashboard. Contrasting yellow exterior graphics in the style of the famous Ecurie Francorchamps racing team were applied and Fuchs alloy wheels were fitted in place of the original steel wheels.
Finishing touches included the full interior trim with leather-bound carpets and a pair of beautiful Tillett carbon fibre racing seats. The car debuted in the 2.0L Cup round at the Monza Historic Festival and also raced in the Dix Mille Tours at Paul Ricard, where it started the 2.0L Cup race from third on the grid and led the race for a time, before finishing eighth overall.
